In a breakthrough for digital healthcare, preschools in Khanty-Mansiysk have deployed diagnostic robots capable of detecting early symptoms of colds and respiratory infections in just 15 seconds. Developed by a local IT company, the innovation highlights Russia’s growing leadership in applying artificial intelligence to healthcare settings.
From Pilot to Everyday Practice
Mornings at kindergartens in Khanty-Mansiysk now begin with a futuristic check-up. Instead of a nurse with a thermometer, children are greeted by a white-coated “doctor” — an AI-powered diagnostic robot designed by regional IT specialists. The technology, first tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, proved so effective in reducing infection rates that it quickly became a trusted part of daily life in preschools.
Teachers report that the system has significantly decreased the number of children who fall ill shortly after returning from sick leave. “Often a child comes back to the group and gets sick again in a few days,” one educator explained. “The robot helps prevent that.”
Each robot performs rapid, noninvasive health checks that take just 5–6 seconds. It can measure temperature, weight, and pulse, examine the oral cavity for early signs of cavities, and maintain a digital medical record — including vaccination history and past illnesses. When suspicious symptoms are detected, the system automatically flags the child for a follow-up exam by a healthcare professional.
Parents have also embraced the innovation. One mother said, “We love it. The robot caught my child’s sore throat right away, and the nurse was able to check him before it got worse.” To make the transition smoother, video tutorials were shared on social media explaining how to use the device. With proven success, the city government plans to expand the program to 62 additional kindergartens. This rollout is expected to reduce infection rates among children while easing the workload of medical staff.

In the next one to two years, the technology is expected to expand to other Russian regions, introducing new functions such as the detection of additional symptoms, integration with local clinics, and the creation of analytic platforms for disease monitoring. These developments will make preventive healthcare more proactive, data-driven, and accessible.
