MPEI Researchers Develop Digital Twin of Boiler to Reduce Harmful Emissions

Researchers at the National Research University MPEI have developed a predictive model of combustion processes and pollutant emissions for a digital twin of industrial boilers, helping improve efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

The model quantitatively predicts emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and ash based on fuel characteristics and operating parameters such as excess air, combustion-zone temperature, and boiler load. This makes it possible to run scenario analyses and identify operating modes that maximize thermal efficiency while minimizing atmospheric emissions. A digital twin built on these models further improves forecasting accuracy by accounting for the boiler's actual operating condition, helping reduce environmental risks.

"Research in predictive analytics as a foundation for digital transformation creates the technological groundwork for introducing advanced intelligent solutions into the thermal power sector and paves the way for more efficient and environmentally responsible management of heat-generating equipment," said Nikolay Rogalev, Rector of the National Research University MPEI.

The research was conducted jointly with the Research Institute Center for Environmental Industrial Policy as part of a state-funded program commissioned by Russia's Ministry of Industry and Trade.
