Over 11,000 Russian Drivers Hit the SOS Button Last Year

Russia’s ERA-GLONASS emergency network is saving lives on the road — one press of a button at a time.

More than 11,000 Russian drivers used the state-run ERA-GLONASS system in the past year to summon emergency responders during accidents and other critical situations, according to new data reported by TASS. The built-in SOS button, installed in nearly all modern vehicles sold in Russia, connects drivers directly to regional emergency services with a single tap — and in severe crashes, it activates automatically, sending the vehicle’s exact coordinates to the 112 dispatch center within seconds.

A Fully Domestic Safety System

All ERA-GLONASS devices are made entirely from Russian components, part of the country’s ongoing effort to localize production of critical digital systems. Over the past three years, the number of domestic manufacturers has grown enough to fully supply the national automotive market.

The result: faster response times and more lives saved. According to Alexey Raykevich, CEO of AO GLONASS, emergency crews can often reach accident sites within minutes.

‘Drivers are increasingly using the SOS button not just for crashes, but to report fires, missing people, or other emergencies they witness on the road,’ he said.

The expansion of ERA-GLONASS reflects a broader trend in Russia’s digital infrastructure — technology designed not for convenience, but for survival.
