Russia to Develop Measurement Systems for Eco-Monitoring Drones

Smart unmanned platforms are expected to track environmental conditions in hard-to-reach areas.

Russia is set to develop its own environmental monitoring systems for unmanned aerial vehicles, according to RT-Tekhpriemka, a subsidiary of the state technology group Rostec. Working with the Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics, the company plans to produce measurement modules that will track air quality around remote industrial sites and generate pollution maps. The systems will also be used to forecast how emissions could spread beyond those areas.

Leading scientists and engineers are to carry out research and development work, followed by real-world testing of the technology.

Cutting Pollution Damage

According to RT-Tekhpriemka chief executive Vladlen Shorin, accurate monitoring and forecasting can significantly reduce damage caused by air pollution.

“Our joint effort with the institute is aimed at creating Russian environmental monitoring systems that will deliver not only technological independence, but also effective air-quality control,” Shorin said.

Alexander Chernokulsky, deputy director for science at the Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics, said Russian researchers are actively advancing atmospheric observation methods using a range of approaches.

“The most promising method, in our view, is acoustic, or sodar, sounding. It is particularly effective when combined with data collected by UAVs. Sodar is based on a phenomenon discovered at our institute – the scattering of sound by atmospheric turbulence and inhomogeneities formed by air movement,” he said.

The joint project is expected to result in new, innovative environmental monitoring tools developed in Russia.
