Russia to Digitize and Microchip Its Entire Livestock Population

The nationwide system will track every animal’s origin, health, and movements — from birth to export.

Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture plans to launch a unified digital registration system for all farm animals across the country, according to Deputy Minister Roman Nekrasov. The initiative will bring every head of livestock into a centralized database, making it possible to trace each animal’s life cycle — a step officials say will improve food quality control, disease prevention, and breeding efficiency.

The Benefits of Microchipping

Alongside digital records, Russia is preparing to roll out mass livestock microchipping. Each animal will receive an electronic tag containing detailed data about its health, genetics, and productivity. The chips will make it easier to monitor the movement of livestock both domestically and internationally.

For breeders, the system promises new precision in tracking valuable traits — and identifying genetic defects — within herds. Nekrasov said the combined use of digital tracking and microchipping will mark a major step toward modernizing Russia’s agricultural ecosystem, aligning it with the most advanced traceability systems in the world.
