Russia to Introduce AI Curriculum in Middle Schools

Starting September 2025, students will learn to generate text and images with neural networks, while also tackling ethics and cybersecurity.
Russian schools are set to launch a new course on artificial intelligence for students in grades 5 through 9. Beginning September 1, 2025, the curriculum will teach students how to create texts and images using neural networks, according to Baymaksky Vestnik.
The course will blend theory with hands-on learning, including interactive materials such as comics, digital tasks, and access to modern AI tools. Lessons will be presented in a gamified format to keep students engaged.
Leading AI companies and experts contributed to the development of the course materials. Alongside technical skills, students will explore the history of technology and literary references, with modules on generative AI and online safety.
The program also addresses the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. Students will discuss deepfakes, misinformation, and the fine line between creativity and deception. A free teacher-training module is available to help educators prepare.
Although classified as an extracurricular subject, the course reflects growing concern among Russian experts about digital threats. For example, images posted online can be used to fabricate fake content for blackmail. In most cases, cybercriminals are after money or personal data.
