Russia Unveils a Digital Platform to Automate Oil and Gas Drilling

The new system combines software, sensors, and predictive analytics to make drilling faster, safer, and more precise.

A tech company from Tyumen, Kenera, has developed a “digital drilling” platform that automates key stages of oil and gas well construction. The system integrates real-time monitoring, predictive algorithms, and automated control modules — a step toward fully intelligent drilling operations in Russia’s energy sector.

The digital platform analyzes drilling parameters, monitors equipment load, predicts risks, and manages operations automatically. By combining data analytics with automation, Kenera’s system can cut drilling time, increase precision, and reduce the likelihood of accidents.

To support the rollout, the company launched Kenera Soft, a specialized division bringing together software engineers, field technicians, and system integration experts. The first full-scale deployments are expected on oilfields by the end of the year, after final testing is complete.

A Local Tech Push

Kenera presented its project at the Tyumen Oil and Gas Forum (TNF) alongside other domestic innovations, from thermal stabilization systems to rotary-steerable tools.

Deputy Governor Andrei Panteleev emphasized that regional energy companies are prioritizing homegrown technology: “Domestic solutions not only meet the market’s needs but are shaping a new digital culture in hydrocarbon extraction.”

The project reflects Russia’s wider shift toward industrial automation, using data-driven systems to enhance efficiency in one of the country’s most vital industries.
