St. Petersburg Deploys AI Cameras to Track Construction Waste

Authorities in St. Petersburg are turning to AI-powered surveillance to crack down on illegal dumping and improve environmental compliance in the construction sector. In an interview with Vedomosti Severo-Zapad, Andrey Slyunkov, head of the city’s newly formed Environmental Police, described how the department is building a modern system for monitoring waste transportation.
According to Slyunkov, the agency plans to expand its technical infrastructure by installing more AI-enabled cameras along key routes used by waste haulers. The goal is to create a comprehensive, real-time monitoring network capable of spotting violations automatically.
The initiative marks a step forward in the use of artificial intelligence for urban environmental management in Russia’s northern capital. By combining digital oversight with strict enforcement, the city aims to reduce illegal dumping, improve waste logistics, and ensure safer, cleaner construction practices.
