Shift Work Goes Digital with Gazprom ID

At the Kovykta gas condensate field, a pilot project has launched to comprehensively digitize a remote production site. A unified digital environment has been created for rotational staff, with authentication via Gazprom ID.

The system currently covers 30 buildings and facilities and serves about 3,500 users, with more than 50 connection points in place. Through a Unified Interaction Platform, digital services have been rolled out for safety briefings and testing, along with a media portal. During downtime, employees can watch educational video lectures that support skills development, as well as entertainment content.

The pilot was implemented by Operator Gazprom ID in partnership with a Russian specialized company. Reliable internet access at a remote site is valuable on its own, but participants received more than connectivity. The project delivers a structured digital environment that supports safety, engagement, and day-to-day comfort for staff working far from urban infrastructure.

Total network capacity reaches 2.5 Gbps, with Wi-Fi throughput at 500 Mbps. The integrated solution helps maintain continuity of operations, improves oversight, and reduces operating costs. Data collected through the system gives site management a clearer basis for decisions that directly affect workforce conditions and operational efficiency.

Operating Beyond Geography

The Kovykta gas condensate field, the largest in eastern Russia, is located about 450 km northeast of Irkutsk.

The site sits in sparsely populated terrain on a high plateau, with permafrost in some areas. The landscape is cut by multiple canyon-like valleys, and the climate is harsh and sharply continental. Commissioned in 2022, the field plays a strategic role. It supplies gas to the Power of Siberia pipeline and, together with the Chayandinskoye field in Yakutia, feeds the Amur gas processing plant.

Part of a Broader Strategy

Despite the complexity of deployment, this pilot is not a standalone effort. PJSC Gazprom is pursuing a broader strategy to deploy digital technologies across remote production assets. The goal is to improve production and management performance through large-scale adoption of digital tools.

The strategy also includes digital twins. Gazprom is building virtual replicas of operating facilities and systems. In 2025, Gazprom dobycha Orenburg announced work on a digital twin architecture for the Orenburg oil and gas condensate field. The project includes a dynamic reservoir model, well stock, infrastructure, and transport systems synchronized with real-time telemetry.

As digitization expands across assets, the company is moving toward a Unified Data Model integrated with a national-level management system. This foundation will support digital ecosystems across gas, oil, and power operations. New software products are evaluated for compatibility with existing IT infrastructure, undergo detailed testing, and are refined as needed.

Domestic Technology Stack

In line with Russia’s import substitution policy, the strategy relies primarily on domestic technologies. Since 2024, Operator Gazprom ID has been positioning its solutions for the external B2B market, while the Gazprom ID platform has been used within Gazprom’s corporate environment since 2021. Another shift is underway - from a focus on “smart equipment” to building comprehensive digital environments that support personnel, safety, and operational management at remote sites.

Gazprom has been steadily rolling out integrated digital solutions across its operations. In 2023, remote industrial safety monitoring systems were deployed to enable continuous tracking of hazardous facilities. In 2024, Gazprom Yamburg tested computer vision systems to monitor compliance with safety requirements. In 2025, 1C PRO Consulting reported on a project to develop and support a production safety management system at Gazprom Neft. Together, these developments indicate that the industrial safety software segment in Russia’s oil and gas sector has matured into a distinct and growing market.

Humanity has been creating artificial living environments for centuries. Today, the possibilities for building such environments have expanded, making them far more comfortable and efficient. The defining feature of this new paradigm is artificial intelligence…
