Astra Group Partners With Four Universities to Train the Next Generation of IT Talent

Russian infrastructure software developer Astra Group is helping prepare future technology professionals through the federal TOP-IT project.

Astra Group will now begin working with students from the early years of their university studies. Company experts will teach specialized courses, bring real-world engineering challenges into the classroom and participate in student assessments. This time, the company's new industry partners are the Higher School of Economics (HSE University), Saint Petersburg State University, Central University and Orenburg State University.

Astra representatives will also serve as internship mentors and help evaluate graduating students for final certification. Participants will gain hands-on experience in software development, business analytics, project management and IT infrastructure.

Investing in Top-Tier Talent

The goal of the TOP-IT project is to prepare at least 3,500 advanced software developers by 2030. The initiative aims to produce more than programmers who can write code. It is designed to educate software architects capable of designing complex systems, leading engineering teams and working at middle- and senior-level professional standards. The project is being implemented by Mintsifry (Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media) together with the Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation as part of the national Data Economy and Digital Transformation of the State program.

In 2026, participating universities were selected through two tracks. Orenburg State University and Central University joined the TOP-IT Start track. Both institutions are participating in the initiative for the first time and received grants to launch modern IT curricula aimed at preparing students to become mid-level software developers. A total of 21 universities were selected for this track. HSE University and Saint Petersburg State University entered the TOP-IT Pro track. The eight universities selected for this category will prepare a new generation of technology professionals capable not only of contributing within their own organizations but also of sharing expertise with partner universities.

Connecting Universities and Industry

In 2023, Astra Group and RTU MIREA established the joint Astra-Tsentr (Astra Center) laboratory, where students began gaining practical experience with the company's software ecosystem.

"I am extremely pleased to see the opening of the Astra Center at RTU MIREA, which will allow us to work together to prepare highly qualified Russian IT professionals. It is especially valuable that our industry partner helps us stay current with the latest technologies and integrate those that are in greatest demand into the educational process. Thanks to this collaboration, RTU MIREA students can gain the most up-to-date theoretical knowledge and practical IT skills," RTU MIREA Rector Stanislav Kudzh said at the time.

Around the same period, Central University was launched as a private STEM-focused institution created with participation from technology companies. By 2024, it had already brought together more than 30 industry partners.

Then, in 2024, Sber and Yandex, together with leading universities, launched the AI360 program to prepare AI researchers. By that time, Yandex had already trained more than 25,000 IT professionals through 33 educational programs across 12 Russian regions. Together, these initiatives demonstrated that technology companies can play a significant role in addressing workforce development.

From Campus to Careers

Astra Group is actively building its own talent pipeline for Russia's software ecosystem. The company is expanding its Astra-karera (Astra Career) program along with a platform that connects students with employers. Embedding these industry competencies into university curricula helps shorten the transition from graduation to professional work.

Although graduating 3,500 students by 2030 is unlikely to eliminate the industry's workforce shortage entirely, the initiative establishes an important model that can be expanded to more universities and regions across Russia, increasing the supply of qualified technology professionals. From this point forward, success will depend on how quickly universities adapt and how ready students are to engage with real-world work from the beginning of their studies.
