Researchers at Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas have developed a mobile system that modifies the properties of crude oil directly at oil fields. By improving the quality of the crude before it enters the transportation network, the technology is designed to reduce operating costs.

The system is based on ultrasonic cavitation. Microscopic bubbles form within the crude oil, and when they collapse, they generate extreme pressure and temperature. These conditions break down the molecular bonds in heavy hydrocarbons, significantly reducing the concentration of impurities.

The unit's compact, mobile design allows it to be deployed at remote oil fields, including those in the Arctic and offshore. The technology eliminates the need to build permanent processing facilities or transport untreated crude to refineries. According to the developers, the approach is especially valuable in locations where logistics and energy supply substantially increase production costs.
