Universal Analysts: How MEPhI Is Training Specialists for the Future of Nuclear Energy

The National Research Nuclear University MEPhI has launched a new master’s programme in mathematical modelling for nuclear power. Graduates are expected to become specialists capable of calculating and optimising reactor performance.

Who Universal Analysts Are

Universal analysts are engineers who combine expertise in nuclear physics, mathematics, and software development. Rather than simply running off-the-shelf calculation codes, they design these tools themselves, adapt them to specific technical tasks, and interpret the results.

At a nuclear power plant or research centre, such specialists can address complex challenges. They can predict how a reactor will behave under specific conditions, identify ways to improve efficiency, and assess the reliability of safety systems. Without this type of analyst, it is not possible to design a new reactor or extend the safe operating life of an existing one.

Why the Programme Has Become Relevant

Nuclear power is undergoing rapid digitalisation. In the past, engineers relied on manual calculations or relatively simple computing tools. Today, reactors are operated using complex control systems that process large volumes of data and make decisions based on precise mathematical models.

Russia requires its own specialists trained in advanced calculation methods. MEPhI has chosen to develop this expertise in-house, building on established domestic scientific traditions.

The new master’s programme integrates three core areas: computational physics, applied mathematics, and hands-on knowledge of real processes in nuclear facilities. Students will study in close cooperation with enterprises of Rosatom, ensuring that training remains directly connected to industry needs.

What the Programme Teaches

The curriculum focuses on advanced methods for modelling physical processes. Students learn to develop software capable of predicting reactor behaviour with high accuracy under a wide range of operating conditions.

They master the tools used by engineers to evaluate whether plant output can be safely increased, what consequences may follow a failure in a cooling system, and how long nuclear fuel can remain in service. Such assessments require simultaneous proficiency in physics, mathematics, and practical programming skills.

A key component of the programme is practical training at operating facilities. Students work at research centres and experimental installations and receive mentorship from experienced engineers. This approach helps them understand not only theoretical principles but also how those principles are applied in real-world settings.

International Potential

MEPhI has a track record of working with international students and participating in global research projects. Over time, graduates of the programme may contribute to international studies in nuclear physics and nuclear energy.

There is also an indirect effect. Teaching methods developed at MEPhI could serve as a reference for other countries, particularly those building or expanding their own nuclear power sectors. As is often the case in education, effective practices tend to be adopted more broadly.

Outlook for the Sector

The launch of this programme indicates that the nuclear industry is preparing for a new phase of development. Plans include fourth-generation reactors, experimental projects, and capacity expansion. All of these initiatives will require a substantial number of highly qualified engineers.
