Yandex Music Plans to Label Tracks Created With AI
Yandex Music plans to give artists and rights holders a way to tell listeners when AI was used to create music.
“We are currently discussing the issue with rights holders and collecting data on which content was created using AI tools,” Yandex Music said. The company is considering a label on individual track pages rather than a separate section for AI-generated music.
Musicians are divided over the idea: some see labeling as a fair measure, while others compare the debate to resistance to synthesizers in the 1980s.
Maxim Abramov, head of the Applied AI Laboratory at the St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, estimates that tracks showing signs of AI use already account for more than 36% of the Yandex Music catalog, while tens of thousands of generated tracks are uploaded to Deezer every day.
“At that scale, it makes more sense to work within the existing catalog structure: add a label to the content page and a filter in the settings, similar to how explicit content is labeled today,” Abramov said.
The service has already launched Lyudi IIskusstva (People of AI Art), a playlist featuring projects by artists who use neural networks as part of their creative work.
