Researchers at the Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University's Institute of Biomedical Systems (ETU LETI) have developed a new embedded chip for measuring heart rate. The module is more compact than any comparable Russian-made solution while maintaining the same level of measurement accuracy.

According to the developers, the chip marks an important step toward domestic production of smartwatches, fitness bands, and other wearable devices. Most Russian manufacturers currently rely on Chinese electronic components, increasing production costs. Replacing them with domestically developed modules could make wearable devices more affordable while strengthening the industry's independence from foreign suppliers.

"Thanks to its compact size and low power consumption, our module can be integrated into wearable devices to monitor a user's cardiac cycle parameters in real time. We also focused on making these modules as inexpensive to manufacture as possible without compromising data collection accuracy," Dmitry Egorov, Deputy Director of ETU LETI's Institute of Biomedical Systems, told Izvestia.
