AI Takes on a Teaching Role in Tyumen State University Pilot
Researchers at the University of Tyumen tested a new teaching model in which human instructors serve as mentors while artificial intelligence acts as a consultant and partner for reviewing ideas. More than 2,000 students took part in the pilot.
The research team identified five core roles for instructors: subject-matter expert, guide, organizer, social facilitator, and motivator. The first two functions were assigned to AI models trained on verified scientific data and designed to identify weaknesses in students' work.
According to Ravedovskaya, AI delivers the greatest educational value when it serves as an expert, consultant, and data analyst rather than attempting to imitate a human teacher. University researchers say that rolling out the model on a broader scale will require significant revisions to academic programs.
