RTU MIREA Develops Software to Monitor Sunflower Seed Purity

The software can operate as a standalone tool or be integrated into digital equipment.

Researchers at RTU MIREA have developed a software module that monitors the purity of sunflower seeds in real time. Performing the same task manually requires production lines to be stopped and also carries the risk of human error.

The new module addresses both problems. It runs on a computer connected to a camera positioned above a conveyor or separator. The algorithm continuously monitors the flow of seeds, measures the amount of impurities, and sends the data to an operator. If contamination exceeds a preset threshold, the system can issue an alert so the equipment can be adjusted.

“Seed purity is fundamental to the quality of the resulting oil or crop,” said Vladislav Blagoveshchensky, Associate Professor of Industrial Informatics at RTU MIREA. “Previously, inspections were essentially spot checks: stop the line, take a sample, and examine it. Half an hour could pass between those checks, during which tons of material might move through a separator with incorrect settings. Our software runs continuously, monitors every section of the flow, and immediately shows whether everything is operating as it should.”
