2GIS Launches Sensor-Based Navigation
The feature works even when satellite signals are completely unavailable.
2GIS has released a major update to its in-car navigation system. It can now continue guiding drivers even when satellite signals are completely unavailable, including in tunnels, mountainous areas and dense urban environments.
When the satellite connection weakens, the system first attempts to refine the device's location using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. If those sources are also unavailable, it switches to the smartphone's built-in gyroscope and accelerometer. The gyroscope measures movement, while the accelerometer detects direction and turns. Together, they enable what the company calls sensor-based navigation.
Dmitry Shvarts, product manager for Transport at 2GIS, said that satellite positioning remains the most accurate way to determine location, while the sensors assist only when signal reception is unreliable. The new feature is already available to all iOS and Android users and can be enabled in the settings. For the system to work correctly, the smartphone must also be mounted in a car holder.
