AI Keeps Watch on Russian Tram Drivers, Stops Vehicles if Trouble Hits

A neural network named 'Gryphon' is now embedded in Russia’s next-gen trams, stepping in when a driver falls unconscious or shows signs of distress.

Russia is rolling out a fleet of new-generation trams equipped with artificial intelligence designed to monitor the health and alertness of drivers. Developed in the Chelyabinsk region, 15 of these trams are set to begin service in Yekaterinburg.

Each tram can carry up to 260 passengers and comes with advanced navigation, climate control, low-floor design, and features that accommodate passengers with disabilities.

What sets these vehicles apart is the integration of the AI system called Gryphon, which constantly monitors the driver’s condition. If the system detects that the driver has fainted, fallen asleep, or is showing signs of serious fatigue, it will automatically and gently bring the tram to a stop.

In addition to emergency interventions, Gryphon also performs proactive analysis. If it identifies early warning signs of drowsiness or physical discomfort, the system alerts a dispatcher before the situation escalates.

This AI-powered safety system reflects Russia’s broader effort to incorporate intelligent monitoring tools into public transportation—aiming to enhance both passenger safety and operational reliability.
