Russia Taps Space and Defense Giants to Build High-Tech Gas Extraction Equipment

Roscosmos and Almaz-Antey are joining forces to create advanced, AI-powered drilling technology for Gazprom as Russia accelerates its push for energy independence.

Russia’s leading aerospace and defense corporations—Roscosmos and Almaz-Antey—are teaming up to produce next-generation hydrocarbon extraction equipment for Gazprom, the country’s flagship gas producer. The announcement came from Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, who highlighted the country’s increasing reliance on domestically made extraction tools.

Back in 2014, Russian-made equipment accounted for just 30 percent of the country’s geological exploration and extraction operations. By the end of last year, that figure had jumped to more than 65 percent—and it's still climbing.

The new equipment will integrate both engineering hardware and digital intelligence developed in-house. Roscosmos has already mastered hydraulic fracturing techniques, while Almaz-Antey is advancing subsea extraction technology. Together, they will deploy these capabilities to support Gazprom’s upstream operations.

Artificial intelligence is also playing a growing role. Deep neural networks are now being used to interpret hydrodynamic data and select development strategies for hard-to-recover reserves. Meanwhile, tools like virtual flow meters and other digital monitoring systems help streamline control over real-time drilling processes.

Russia’s energy sector is banking on homegrown innovation as it retools for a future of technologically sovereign resource extraction.
