High-Speed Internet Brought to Baikal Seals in Russia
A major network upgrade on the Ushkany Islands now enables scientists to monitor the lives and behavior of Baikal seals with unprecedented clarity and stability.

MTS, in partnership with the Baikal Museum, has increased data transmission capacity fivefold on the Ushkany Islands in the central part of Lake Baikal. Engineers established a wireless communication channel spanning more than 100 kilometers, significantly boosting the network’s bandwidth.
The upgraded high-speed internet connection enhances the quality of scientific monitoring and improves the stability and resolution of live broadcasts from seal rookeries on the Baikal Museum’s website.
Observation and Protection
According to Konstantin Zimin, Director of MTS in the Irkutsk Region, the strengthened network is resilient to harsh climate conditions. It will not only expand scientific research capabilities, but also help protect the environmentally sensitive area from unauthorized tourism.
Visitors can observe Baikal in real time through museum exhibit screens and via the website. All video streams are stored in a digital archive. Additional monitoring cameras may later be installed at wild rookeries and other museum-managed locations.
