Russia Develops ID FACE System for Animal Identification
Animal Identification Animals will be identified by nose patterns instead of ear tags.

Russia’s Bogomolova Research Institute of Veterinary Medicine has unveiled a new technology for identifying animals on farms. Scientists led by chief veterinarian Denis Cherkasov have developed an intelligent system called ID FACE that collects biometric data for both large and small livestock.
The neural network has been trained to recognize animals by their dermatoglyphic pattern – the unique texture of the nose. Researchers say an animal’s nose pattern does not change over its lifetime and is as distinctive as a human fingerprint.
All the Data Is in the Nose
The smart system has been integrated with the Horriot, Merkuriy, and Cerber information platforms. Veterinarians only need to point a smartphone camera at an animal to access key data, including pedigree information, offspring records, vaccinations, and other procedures.
The data can be used to manage farm operations more efficiently, maintain accurate livestock records, and identify small domestic animals.
