Russian Substations Move to Digital Protection

Domestic microprocessor systems will be used to ensure the security of energy facilities.

Rosseti’s Novosibirsk branch has upgraded equipment at the Mokhovaya and Zarechnaya substations. Outdated electromechanical relay protection and automation devices have been replaced with modern domestically produced microprocessor-based systems.

The new equipment can be integrated into automated power grid control systems, while also offering expanded capabilities for diagnostics and monitoring.

Minimum Impact, Maximum Safety

The Zarechnaya and Mokhovaya substations supply electricity to socially significant facilities, industrial enterprises, residential neighborhoods, as well as transport hubs and communications systems. Their reliable operation directly affects everyday life in the city. The upgraded equipment makes it possible to respond quickly to abnormal situations, minimizing their impact on consumers.

Earlier, researchers at the Alekseev Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University developed and patented a unique method for protecting digital substations from cyber threats. The system is able to distinguish between a hacker attack and a real equipment failure.
