Russia’s leading oil and gas university opens new IT laboratory
Students will hone their engineering skills using state-of-the-art networking equipment and software.

An innovative IT laboratory has opened at the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, Russia’s main higher-education institution for the energy sector. The project was announced by EcoRouter, a company that develops carrier-grade telecommunications equipment and is involved in workforce training for the extractive industries.
At the university, EcoRouter specialists equipped a teaching and research laboratory for data transmission networks and systems using the company’s own solutions. Students now have the opportunity to develop hands-on skills working with domestically produced networking tools and software. Up to 100 students a year are expected to train in the new lab.
Dozens of labs nationwide
The laboratory is already hosting research projects, regular classes for students, and masterclasses for practicing IT professionals. According to the rector of Gubkin University, rapid technological development has become a challenge for the education system, and the laboratory format “will help the university prepare specialists capable of solving complex tasks in the oil and gas industry.”
EcoRouter is currently working with around 100 universities and colleges across Russia. The company also supports professional skills competitions and demonstration exams for students in network administration disciplines.
