Russia Develops Its First Compact On-Chip Source of Squeezed Light

Researchers at Rosatom's Quantum Center have developed a compact device that could enable ultra-precise measurements and accelerate the development of quantum technologies. The team says it is the first device of its kind created in Russia and among the first worldwide.

Squeezed light is a special quantum state of light that enables measurements with precision beyond the standard quantum limit. It can be used to build compact, high-sensitivity sensors, including medical devices, as well as optical quantum computers and portable telecommunications systems.

The project was carried out by research teams led by Igor Bilenko and Dmitry Chermoshentsev as part of Russia's quantum computing roadmap, which is overseen by Rosatom (State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom).

"Research on squeezed light is one of the most promising areas in quantum science and is critical to the future of quantum technologies worldwide. Only a limited number of countries and organizations have been able to establish a strong position in this field. Our researchers are now among the leaders, placing us in the first tier of countries and companies that have achieved tangible results," said Dmitry Chermoshentsev, head of the research group.
