Russia Launches Supercomputing Hub to Power Nuclear Physics Research

A newly opened computing center in Samara is bolstering Russia’s high-energy physics programs with 300 nodes and direct links to the country’s top nuclear research facility.

A high-performance computing center has been launched at Samara University, named after Sergey Korolev. Equipped with 300 state-of-the-art processing nodes, the center will support experiments conducted at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna—the heart of Russia’s nuclear science ecosystem.

The university’s partnership with JINR demonstrates how a functional computing cluster can be developed from scratch, not only for atomic research but for any scientific institution. According to university officials, the center is expected to bring cutting-edge research into the Samara region, from quantum computing and advanced material science to high-energy physics.

The center will focus in particular on studying the internal structure of protons and deuterons. Researchers will simulate particle interactions and experimental scenarios, opening new opportunities for fundamental discoveries in Russian science.
