Russia Modernizes Donbas Power Grid with AI and Smart Tech

A series of digital infrastructure upgrades has already cut outages by 30 percent in 2025, with more innovations on the way.

By the end of 2025, Russian energy giant Rosseti plans to complete ten major projects aimed at digitalizing and strengthening the reliability of the Donbas power grid. The company’s CEO, Andrey Ryumin, announced the initiative during a meeting with Denis Pushilin, head of the Donetsk People's Republic, according to Pervy Tekhnichesky.

Since 2022, Donbas has been undergoing a large-scale modernization effort, including the overhaul of substations, power transmission lines, and control systems. The integration of smart technologies, including artificial intelligence, has already reduced outage rates by 30 percent in the first half of 2025.

"Together with the DPR, we’re not just restoring infrastructure—we’re deploying cutting-edge solutions like digital substations and real-time monitoring systems," said Ryumin.

These projects are part of a 2024 agreement that also includes workforce training for the regional energy sector. The roadmap envisions further integration of Russian-made innovations into the Donbas power grid.
