Engineers at Novosibirskiy gosudarstvennyy tekhnicheskiy universitet NETI (Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI) have developed a hardware-software system for monitoring print quality at a Moscow-based enterprise.

According to Ivan Tomilov, head of the Department of Automated Control Systems at the university, color quality in printing was previously checked only intermittently, leading to occasional defects. The team proposed automating the process using a combined hardware and software system with analytics that detect deviations in color application on packaging.

Control Zone

The system consists of a controlled lighting environment for remote imaging of product samples and custom software that compares printed images with reference ones, accounting for possible micro-shifts and rotations.

“We have confirmed the fundamental feasibility of automated image comparison and are now discussing the second phase of the project with the company. The next step is to create a system for continuous automated monitoring directly on the printing line, which will allow real-time quality control. In the future, we plan to enable automatic adjustments to printing parameters, such as color feed regulation or stopping the printing process if needed,” Tomilov said.
