Russian Regions Launch Public Wi-Fi Maps to Expand Internet Access

In Orenburg, Russia is piloting a new digital tool that maps public Wi-Fi hotspots—making internet access easier for both residents and travelers.

A new initiative in the Orenburg region of Russia is creating an interactive map of public Wi-Fi hotspots to help locals and tourists find free internet access quickly. The project is being spearheaded by the regional Ministry of Digital Development and Communications in response to public demand, according to TASS.

Although the region already enjoys strong wired internet coverage, officials are continuing to build out the digital infrastructure. They are cataloging all available public access points and updating the map regularly to reflect the latest data.

This move is particularly timely, given the temporary mobile internet restrictions in some parts of the region due to security concerns. The new Wi-Fi map offers a stable and accessible alternative for those needing reliable connectivity.

The project aligns with Russia’s broader digital transformation strategy. If successful, similar solutions could be rolled out in other regions across the country.
