Russian Students Develop Compact System to Prevent Apartment Flooding

Device automatically shuts off water instead of merely sending leak alerts.

Students at Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI are developing an affordable and compact system designed to prevent water leaks in residential apartments, the university’s press service said.

According to project engineer and Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering student Maxim Nenashyev, many existing automated leak-protection systems are bulky and require professional installation.

“We wanted to create a device that anyone could install themselves. Our system is a compact autonomous unit that physically shuts off the faucet in case of an emergency. When water in a sink or bathtub reaches a threshold level, the device prevents overflow by stopping the flow before it spills onto the floor,” the student explained.

Simple to Use and Easy to Install

A moisture-resistant electronic sensor is installed near the upper section of a sink or bathtub. When it comes into contact with water, the sensor sends a signal to a mechanism attached to the faucet valve, which turns the handle to stop the flow. The system also activates light and sound alerts to inform residents.

“The system does more than notify users of a leak, like passive sensors do. It resolves the issue by shutting off the water, preventing flooding in the apartment,” the developer added.

The team has already presented a working prototype and has begun building the final version of the device. Special attention will be given to the casing, which must be compact and aesthetically suitable for home interiors. The software component will also be refined. Next year, the device is expected to undergo real-world testing and further improvements based on user feedback.
