In Russia, Insurance Is Moving Into the Smart Home

Rosgosstrakh is using AI and connected home sensors to turn insurance from a reactive product into a real-time digital service.

Rosgosstrakh, one of Russia’s largest insurers, has begun integrating artificial intelligence across its operations, starting with risk assessment and expanding into customer service and product design. In 2025, the company took a major step further by linking home insurance directly to smart home ecosystems.

Machine learning models have been used in auto and property insurance for years. Every quote for mandatory auto insurance (OSAGO) and comprehensive coverage (CASCO) now проходит automatic verification. These models are continuously refined and retrained and can already account for hundreds of variables, including claims history and the characteristics of specific regions. The system even uses geospatial data tied to an address and local claims statistics.

AI Beyond Risk Assessment

Artificial intelligence is also used in customer support. Algorithms help call center operators find relevant information faster and draft responses, though communication with clients is still handled by humans. The company emphasizes that automation does not replace specialists but removes routine tasks and speeds up their work.

The most visible project of the past year was the integration of insurance into a smart home ecosystem. In partnership with the SprutHub platform, Rosgosstrakh launched a product that directly connects home and property insurance to smart home sensors.

If the system detects a water leak or smoke, alerts are sent not only to the homeowner but also to the insurance company. This allows insurers to warn clients more quickly and begin handling potential damage earlier.

“This project changes the traditional logic of insurance. It becomes part of everyday life,” said Olga Zarovnyaeva, head of Rosgosstrakh’s branch in the Udmurt Republic. “In this format, a subscription model often turns out to be more convenient and cost-effective than a classic insurance policy.”

Looking ahead, the company plans to expand the range of sensors, adding motion detectors, temperature sensors, and energy consumption meters. The collected data will be used not only for insurance claims but also for analytics and the development of new services.
