Russian Cities Roll Out AI Traffic Cameras to Spot Drivers and Pedestrians Breaking Rules
New systems automatically detect violations, monitor driver behavior, and feed real-time data to police to reduce accidents.

In Chelyabinsk, authorities have installed artificial intelligence–powered cameras to monitor both drivers and pedestrians for traffic violations. The technology is part of a broader rollout across Russia aimed at improving road safety.
The AI systems don’t just ticket speeders or reckless drivers—they also track pedestrian behavior. Using neural network algorithms, the cameras can detect when someone approaches a crosswalk, monitor their movements, and flag violations by either party. The system then cross-checks behavior against the traffic code and sends confirmed violations directly to the police.
According to the Ministry of Public Safety of the Chelyabinsk Region, the technology also helps monitor drivers’ condition to reduce accidents. Since early 2025, a single camera has already registered 614 violations. Local officials plan to install six more complexes at high-risk road sections in the near future.
