Ultrasound With Intelligence: Russia Launches Serial Production of AI-Powered Scanners

Serial production of AI-powered RuScan 80 ultrasound scanners has begun in Moscow. The devices are used for echocardiography, obstetrics and gynecology, as well as oncology.

Serial production of RuScan 80 ultrasound scanners with built-in artificial intelligence has begun at the Technopolis Moscow Special Economic Zone. The device helps physicians automate routine tasks related to examinations and data analysis. It features a 23.8-inch widescreen monitor, a touchscreen control panel, and a full set of AI modules for echocardiography, gynecology, obstetrics, and oncology.

The developer is Scanner Research and Production Association, a resident of the Technopolis Moscow Special Economic Zone since 2022. The scanner is already helping physicians across a range of specialties detect pathologies at early stages and identify neoplasms.

What Can RuScan 80 Do?

Ultrasound remains one of the most widely used methods for examining the body. Ultrasound does not involve harmful ionizing radiation, does not require an incision, and provides real-time imaging. That makes it useful across a broad range of medical specialties, from pregnancy monitoring to cardiology and oncology.

The developers have enhanced ultrasound with the scanner's AI capabilities. It can automatically optimize images, identify diagnostic planes, outline lesions, and generate a draft report. The scanner also has a built-in fetal biometry module. At the same time, the device is better adapted to the realities of the Russian healthcare system. It has an easy-to-use Russian-language interface, supports Russian data standards, and can be integrated into established clinical workflows. For physicians, that means less time spent learning and configuring the device. For healthcare facilities, it makes it possible to introduce the technology without completely restructuring existing infrastructure.

The device is equipped with high-precision single-crystal transducers and a 3D imaging function that helps physicians obtain more detailed and clearer images. Cardiologists, for example, can assess heart function, while oncologists can use elastography to examine tissue and look for suspicious changes.

How AI Became Part of Medicine

Artificial intelligence in Russian healthcare has long moved beyond experimental projects. Algorithms were first adopted extensively for medical image analysis. Ultrasound was the next logical area. The potential for automation is particularly significant here. In 2023–2024, Russian developers and research organizations began more actively creating specialized computer-vision models for ultrasound diagnostics. In 2025, expert-class systems with integrated AI, including Sonorus 700, entered the market.

In parallel, a regulatory framework for medical AI is taking shape. For example, GOST R 71673-2024 established requirements for testing artificial intelligence systems used in diagnostic imaging. RuScan 80 shows how AI is becoming part of serially produced medical equipment that can be used in any outpatient clinic.

Serial production of RuScan 80 will make it possible to increase output and further improve the device's design and software based on real-world use.

This is not Scanner Research and Production Association's first experience with this type of work. The company previously took part in the federal Labor Productivity project, where it optimized production of the RuScan 65 ultrasound system. Over six months, it cut the time required to manufacture a single device from 18.4 hours to 12.5 hours, a reduction of nearly one-third. The project's economic benefit exceeded 22.5 million rubles (about $267,000).

The Path to Global Markets

This production base is also important for entering foreign markets. Medical equipment is now evaluated not only on its technical specifications but also on ease of use, software capabilities, interoperability with other systems, and, of course, price.

Russian developers can offer integrated systems in which the hardware and software are developed together. For export, RuScan 80 will need its interface and software adapted to the requirements of individual countries, while the underlying technology itself is universal.

Residents of the capital's special economic zone develop and manufacture products that are in demand across a range of sectors, including healthcare. Serial production of AI-powered ultrasound scanners was recently launched here. Eleven of these devices are already in use at medical facilities in St. Petersburg, Moscow Region, Kursk Region, Ryazan Region, Sverdlovsk Region, Rostov Region, as well as the Altai and Stavropol regions
