AI-Driven Trams in Russia Deliver Smoother, Safer Rides
Officials say autonomous systems handle acceleration, braking and traffic signals with greater precision than human drivers.
Moscow Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov said artificial intelligence can operate trams more smoothly and precisely than human drivers. While passengers may not notice a difference, AI-controlled trams accelerate and brake more evenly and strictly follow traffic rules.
Driverless Trams on the Line
By the end of the year, Moscow plans to deploy 15 driverless trams operating on two routes. At the same time, testing of an autonomous metro train will be completed. The train is currently running in test mode at night with a driver on board.
In 2023, the city established a Center for Autonomous Transport. Russia’s first driverless tram entered service in October 2025, operating on Route 10 between Shchukinskaya station and Kulakova Street in northwest Moscow. Test runs of an autonomous metro train began in January 2026 and are currently conducted without passengers. Full passenger service is expected to launch in 2027, with the first fully automated metro line planned by 2030.
