Russia Uses Virtual Reality to Treat Depression with Immersive Therapy

A new VR-based treatment developed at Sechenov University helps patients relieve anxiety and psychosomatic disorders by visualizing calming environments and guided exercises.

Sechenov University in Russia has launched a cutting-edge mental health treatment using immersive virtual reality. Developed at its Psychosomatic Medicine Clinic, the program incorporates a custom VR headset application designed to support patients with depression, anxiety, and psychosomatic conditions.

Wearing the headset, patients are guided through serene digital environments — from peaceful landscapes to cozy interiors. Human-like avatars lead breathing exercises and muscle relaxation routines. Through visual cues like animated chest movements and glowing muscle regions, patients gain a clearer understanding of proper technique and body awareness.

The VR approach has shown to outperform traditional therapy methods like listening to verbal instructions. It enables deeper focus, eliminating distractions from ambient noise or smartphone alerts. This immersive focus not only benefits mental health, but also contributes to overall physical well-being.

Next steps include expanding the application’s library to include mindfulness routines, aimed at anchoring patients in the present moment and reducing anxiety linked to past or future events.
