Researchers at Novosibirsk State Technical University NETI are developing a device that can measure blood sugar levels without puncturing the skin, according to the university’s press service.

Software for the device was created by Alexander Kashtanov, a graduate student at the Department of Automation and Computer Engineering at NSTU NETI. The glucometer consists of a graphene sensor, a measurement circuit and a microcontroller located inside the device’s casing.

According to the developer, the key feature of the project is the use of electrodes operating on an electrochemical principle. The glucometer is attached to a user’s back and determines glucose levels from perspiration within a few minutes.

The software has received a state certificate of registration as a computer program. The team is also assembling the device itself, which will be able to take measurements even when the user is at rest.

“The main advantage of our software is its cross-platform capability. A specialized calibration algorithm and the ability to run on PCs and smartphones with different operating systems ensure that users can quickly obtain analysis results without major technical limitations,” the graduate student added.

Diabetes in the Spotlight of Researchers

Russian scientists are paying increasing attention to diabetes as a major endocrine disease. Earlier it was reported that students at Moscow Aviation Institute and Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia are developing a wireless insulin pump for diabetes patients that can be controlled via a mobile application.

Researchers from the Research Institute of Therapy and Preventive Medicine have also introduced an online calculator that helps determine the type of diabetes. The program analyzes user data and outputs the probability of each diabetes type as a percentage. Meanwhile, scientists at Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod have created an AI model that predicts the risk of death from all possible causes in people with diabetes. The artificial intelligence also explains its predictions by showing which data points played the decisive role in the forecast.
