Mobile operator MTS and the Federal Passenger Company have launched a project aimed at improving mobile connectivity on long-distance trains. Signal amplification and relay systems will be integrated into railcars built by Transmashholding.

In the first phase, by the end of 2026, equipment including repeaters and radiating cable inside the railcars will be installed on all Aurora trains operating between St. Petersburg and Moscow. The project was preceded by a series of tests, including trial runs of the equipment on one Aurora train. The equipment provided network coverage along 96% of the entire route.

“Today, all high-speed Sapsan trains operating between Moscow and St. Petersburg are equipped with MTS repeaters, providing reliable signal coverage for 55% of the average daily passenger traffic on this route. Integrating the MTS system into Aurora trains will provide uninterrupted mobile connectivity to more than 90% of passenger traffic on the route by the end of 2026,” the operator’s press service said.
