Scientists are preparing texts and scientific terminology to train the Alisa AI assistant in the Yandex search ecosystem to understand and use the Crimean Tatar language.

According to Ismail Kerimov, director of the Research Institute of Crimean Tatar Philology, History, and Culture of the Peoples of Crimea at F. Yakubov Crimean Engineering and Pedagogical University, specialists need to adapt more than 100,000 sentences across multiple fields of knowledge so that Alisa can hold conversations on these topics.

“This kind of work is being carried out for the first time, as there have been no technical translations from Crimean Tatar for the past 100 years. We are now restoring terminology, including publishing dictionaries of mathematical, chemical, and physical terms. This will give us a knowledge base that allows people to speak their native language on a wide range of topics, including technical ones,” the researcher said.

Preserving Endangered Languages

Earlier reports said that a trilateral agreement is expected to be signed in May between representatives of Yandex, the State Committee of the Republic of Crimea for Interethnic Relations, and the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs. The agreement focuses on AI-powered translation from the Crimean Tatar language.

Experts say preserving the languages of Russia’s indigenous peoples is a critical task, as many are at risk of disappearing. The use of artificial intelligence could help engage younger generations with their native languages.
