AI Could Administer Driver’s License Exams in Russia
The proposal is under discussion as part of a new road safety strategy.

Russia is considering introducing artificial intelligence into the driver’s license examination process, RBC reported. According to the outlet, the Interior Ministry is reviewing the possibility of testing candidates “including the potential use of AI technologies for automated exam administration.” The measure is being discussed as part of the Road Safety Strategy through 2030. Lawmakers have also submitted proposals to the ministry supporting the initiative.
New Technologies on the Road
Digital tools are already widely used to monitor traffic conditions. Cameras equipped with video analytics detect violations and unusual incidents, while smart traffic lights adjust signal timing based on traffic flow. Even road surfaces in Russia are being assessed with the help of AI-based analysis.
Allowing candidates to take exams administered by automated systems could reduce the workload on inspectors and eliminate subjective assessments. Video analytics could also be applied during practical driving tests both on city streets and at driving test facilities.
