Moscow Launches AI Lab to Reinvent Filmmaking
Russia’s first educational hub devoted entirely to neural networks in cinema has opened in Moscow, created through a partnership between VGIK and Sber’s School of Digital Technologies.

The new continuing education program, “Artificial Intelligence and Neural Networks in Film Production,” was designed specifically for the School. The project brings together the iconic VGIK film institute and Russia’s largest tech-focused bank.
The facility is equipped with 15 high-performance computers running cutting-edge software. According to Sergey Morozov, a systems technician at the School of Digital Technologies, the hardware can process, generate, and reproduce video with sound in fractions of a second — speeds out of reach for conventional machines.
At the launch event, future students were welcomed by Russia’s Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, VGIK rector Vladimir Malyshev, and Sber president Herman Gref.
Supporters of the project say the initiative signals a new era for Russia’s creative industries. Graduates will be able to craft competitive content using state-of-the-art technology, reinforcing the country’s film sector on the global stage.
