Russian Regions Test AI to Monitor Road Conditions and Signage

A pilot program in Murmansk is using neural networks to detect road damage, markings, and signage issues at highway speeds.

In Russia’s Murmansk region, a pilot project has been launched to monitor road conditions using artificial intelligence. The initiative, implemented by Beeline in partnership with the regional government, aims to improve oversight of road surfaces, lane markings, and traffic signs, reports CNews.

A special mobile unit equipped with cameras and a processor for real-time data processing records damage while traveling at speeds of up to 100 km/h (62 mph). Developed by Russian tech partner Softlogic.ai, the system transmits information on defects via the mobile operator’s network for prompt repair.

The project is part of Russia’s broader strategy to deploy smart video surveillance and analytics across various sectors, from road management to urban governance. If the technology proves effective in Arctic conditions, it could be scaled to other regions of the country.

Similar solutions are already in use in dozens of Russian cities, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Ufa, where residents report improved road infrastructure and faster response times from local authorities.
