Russian Scientists Use AI to Speed Up Scientific Discovery

A new AI-powered platform can extract data from research papers and turn it into ready-to-test experimental recommendations—cutting the time between hypothesis and experiment.

Chemists and AI researchers from ITMO University in St. Petersburg have developed a platform that automates the search and analysis of scientific data on nanomaterials. The system uses artificial intelligence to rapidly extract relevant information from research papers and convert it into experimental guidance for scientists. In early trials, the platform achieved 81 percent accuracy, and its database of scientific publications can be easily scaled without reconfiguring the entire system.

From Hypothesis to Experiment—Faster

“We deliberately designed a specialized AI tool for a real laboratory task—the design of nanostructures and prediction of cellular responses—rather than a universal research assistant,” explained Nikita Krotkov, a PhD student at ITMO’s Infochemistry Research and Educational Center. “Its multi-agent architecture, which uses retrieval-augmented generation, dramatically improves response quality—crucial when working with scientific data.”

The project reflects a broader global trend: AI is becoming a key accelerator of scientific research, helping labs worldwide move from theory to testing in record time.
