Russian Supersonic Jet to Fly Without a Windshield
Russia is developing a supersonic passenger aircraft with a sealed cockpit, where pilots will navigate without traditional windows by relying entirely on cameras and sensor data. The project is being developed by the State Research Institute of Aviation Systems.
The technology is known as tekhnicheskoye zreniye (technical vision). Instead of looking through a windshield, pilots will monitor external conditions through displays fed by onboard cameras and sensors. Developers have already finalized the aircraft’s design: a sharply pointed nose and a fully enclosed cockpit. The project has been underway for six years under the coordination of the Zhukovsky National Research Center. The institute has also built a dedicated test stand to refine the technology.
Andrey Popov, the institute’s chief specialist for unmanned aviation systems, said developers are working on making onboard avionics more intelligent and integrating artificial intelligence technologies into aircraft operations.
