Sechenov University Develops AI System for Diabetes Management in Women

Young researchers at I. M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University are developing an AI system that analyzes blood glucose levels using not only continuous monitoring data but also the body's hormonal cycles. The EndoSync project has been selected as one of the finalists of the Sechenov Tech accelerator.

Most digital solutions in diabetology are built around an "average" patient model, even though female physiology can significantly affect glycemic dynamics. Women with type 1 diabetes experience changes in insulin requirements during different phases of the menstrual cycle, and these patterns are not always apparent through conventional data analysis.

"We are developing an approach in which female physiology is treated as an independent clinically significant factor affecting blood glucose levels and the course of diabetes. Our AI system will combine glucose monitoring data, analysis of hormonal cycle characteristics, and information about a patient's therapy and lifestyle into a single system," said project author Ekaterina Ershova.

The team also includes developers from Bauman Moscow State Technical University, MTUCI, and Saint Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation. A prototype has already been developed, and the team is conducting interviews with physicians to refine the system's use cases.
