Shvabe Holding has upgraded a fiber-optic network used to control offshore gas production. The wells are now directly connected to the onshore facility. The upgrade also increased data transmission speeds.

“The solution is designed for long-term operation and is intended to ensure uninterrupted operation of the gas production complex, which has a service life of more than 30 years. In the future, the technology could also be used in other projects, including in the Russian Far East and the Arctic,” said Vadim Startsev, CEO of the M.F. Stelmakh Polyus Research Institute.

To switch to the new configuration, engineers upgraded the optoelectronic converter in the transceiver module. It converts the signal transmitted over the fiber-optic cable into an electrical signal that is sent to the actuators. The new technical solutions and components increased the line’s throughput while keeping signal losses to a minimum.
