Oil Worker Towns in Russia Adopt Smart Infrastructure
Oil companies are rolling out digitally enabled, high-comfort residential camps for rotational workers, turning remote oil fields into connected, livable environments.

In Russia’s Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, oil companies are steadily upgrading infrastructure for rotational workers, creating modern and comfortable living conditions at remote fields. RN‑Yuganskneftegaz is implementing a large-scale modernization program for shift settlements, shaping a unified concept of a “smart,” innovation-driven living environment for employees.
Everything for Work and Leisure
At the Priobskoye field, 11 rotational settlements with developed social infrastructure and 48 dormitories are in operation, housing more than 2,500 employees and contractors on a daily basis. Living spaces are being upgraded in stages: canteens, cafés, and shops are renovated, service offerings are expanded, and overall comfort levels are increased.
The Far North by the Numbers
A total of 63 canteens operate across the settlements, capable of serving up to 5,500 people per day. Smart checkout systems are being introduced that automatically recognize dishes and speed up payment without cashier involvement. Mobile modular canteens are used at remote sites; five are currently installed, with five more planned for deployment in 2026.
Digital connectivity is a major focus. All settlements offer stable Wi‑Fi and IP television, information kiosks are installed, and workers have access to e‑books and entertainment content. Recreation areas include movie theaters, libraries, game rooms, and billiard halls, helping employees spend their free time comfortably during long shifts.
Virtual Reality for Training
The development of “smart settlements” also includes professional training. Remote learning systems are being deployed at production sites, including virtual and augmented reality tools that allow workers to upgrade their skills without leaving the workplace.
All medical units are connected to telemedicine services, providing access to regional and federal specialists. Interactive fitness centers with digital training equipment support employee health.
The project is part of the company’s long-term social strategy aimed at creating a sustainable and supportive environment for workers in its regions of operation.
