AI Cameras Help Cut Theft in Kaluga by Nearly Half

The number of apartment burglaries in the Kaluga Region has nearly halved over the past year, thanks in large part to video surveillance systems equipped with artificial intelligence, according to local authorities. Over the first four months of the year, officers from Russia’s National Guard prevented 300 offenses.

Security monitoring in Kaluga now covers about 800 facilities and more than 2,000 locations where residents store personal property. In addition to fewer apartment break-ins, authorities reported declines in thefts from residential building entrances and office premises. Crime-solving rates for offenses committed in public places and on city streets have also improved.

A key contribution has come from AI-powered cameras installed in locations including retail stores. The system uses facial recognition technology and helps investigators identify suspects, even when they travel to the region from elsewhere in the country.

“Some stores are equipped with AI cameras. People may arrive from another region, commit thefts, and leave. These systems allow us to identify offenders and respond quickly to make arrests,” said Maksim Ryasny, deputy head of the criminal investigation department at the Kaluga branch of Russia’s Interior Ministry.

Police and other law enforcement agencies continue to conduct ongoing crime-prevention operations targeting all forms of theft.
