AI Could Power Arctic Infrastructure Development in Russia

Predictive technologies could make industrial facilities in the Far North safer and more reliable.

Artificial intelligence is set to play a crucial role in the future of Russia’s Arctic infrastructure. According to Andrey Kuvaldin, Commercial Director of Transseti JSC, AI tools could analyze and predict the performance of critical facilities operating under extreme northern conditions. Kuvaldin made the statement during the "Arctic – Regions" forum in Arkhangelsk, as reported by TASS.

He explained that AI could serve two primary functions in the region: predictive analytics for industrial operations and enhanced workplace safety.

“These technologies directly affect the reliability of infrastructure and the safety of people living in the harsh Arctic environment,”

 Kuvaldin said.

The Arctic, he added, could also serve as a testbed for advanced innovations such as the industrial Internet of Things and additive manufacturing.

“If a technology works in the Arctic, it will perform effectively in other regions of Russia,”

Kuvaldin noted.

The "Arctic – Regions" forum gathered experts to discuss international cooperation, investment projects, and digital transformation across the Arctic zone. The adoption of AI and automation, they emphasized, is a key step toward sustainable development in the northern territories.

This approach aligns with Russia’s strategy for technological leadership and improving quality of life in remote regions. Open-source data indicates that Transseti is already collaborating with companies specializing in industrial analytics and digital twins of infrastructure assets — a move expected to accelerate AI deployment in the Arctic region.
