Russian and Chinese Scientists to Develop an Innovative System for Detecting Hazardous Substances

A joint research team from Russia and China is building a next‑generation detection platform designed to identify hazardous PFAS compounds in water and food with unprecedented accuracy

A Cross-Border Scientific Alliance

Russian researchers, together with colleagues from China, have secured an international grant to create an advanced system for detecting dangerous substances. The initiative, announced by the press service of the MIREA Russian Technological University, brings together experts from MIREA, Moscow State University, and China Agricultural University.

The goal is to build a highly accurate platform that combines rapid screening with laboratory-grade verification — a dual‑layered approach that aims to significantly improve the reliability of chemical safety assessments.

Protecting Environmental and Food Safety

The new platform will target per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — persistent pollutants widely recognized as harmful to human health and the environment. These chemicals degrade extremely slowly and tend to accumulate in living organisms, increasing long‑term risks.

The research team is tasked with developing new recognition materials, sensor-based detection tools, and advanced digital analytical methodologies. The expected outcome includes both scientific contributions and practical solutions that can be deployed in real‑world monitoring systems.

Such technologies are crucial for ensuring global environmental and food security, as PFAS contamination has become a growing concern across multiple regions.
