Endoscopists at Podolsk Regional Clinical Hospital are using a new AI-based hardware and software system, ArtInCol, developed by Russian researchers, to assist in their work.

The digital assistant has already demonstrated its effectiveness in clinical practice, according to the outlet Regions.

A Second Set of Eyes

According to department head Agaron Ayvazyan, the system analyzes live video from the endoscope in real time. The neural network detects and highlights abnormalities or potentially dangerous areas in the colon on the monitor.

“The system acts as an assistant for detecting colon lesions using computer vision. I want to emphasize that it does not replace the doctor but supports them—it’s essentially a second set of eyes. You could call it a combination of clinical expertise and machine precision,” Ayvazyan said.

Compact and Easy to Use

The system is compact and can be easily integrated with existing endoscopic equipment. It is also straightforward to operate and does not require specialized training.

Hospital clinicians say that integrating advanced technologies into diagnostics is a critical step forward. AI is making medical care more accessible for residents of Podolsk and the surrounding region while improving its overall quality.

Earlier, we reported that researchers in Novosibirsk have begun developing a fundamentally new endoscopic system capable of visualizing tumors in 3D in the stomach and intestines during a single procedure, identifying their type without biopsy, and triggering self-destruction in cancer cells.
