AI Takes Out the Trash: Russian Cities Use Neural Networks to Monitor Waste Disposal

Smart cameras are bringing accountability to garbage collection sites across Russia.

Russian regions are turning to artificial intelligence to keep their streets cleaner and enforce waste disposal rules. The city of Saratov has joined the growing list of municipalities testing AI-powered video monitoring at garbage collection points. Cameras have been installed in several districts to track how containers are filled — and who’s dumping waste where they shouldn’t.

According to Alexey Sidorov, head of the city administration’s housing and utilities committee, the system automatically identifies violators who dispose of trash outside designated areas. The early results, he told a meeting of the city council’s urban development committee, have been promising. By April 2026, the city plans to install 125 smart cameras to oversee waste containers.

An Unbiased Enforcer

The initiative builds on successful deployments by NtechLab, a Russian computer vision company that has implemented similar 24/7 monitoring systems in several regions. The technology analyzes live video feeds, detects rule violations, and alerts operators in real time if collection schedules are disrupted.

Automated alerts go directly to regional waste management services, allowing for faster response times and helping cities maintain cleaner, safer public spaces.

By combining AI with everyday urban infrastructure, projects like Saratov’s are reshaping how municipalities enforce order — replacing manual oversight with data-driven environmental management.
